Barossa Valley Winery Tour

The Barossa Valley is known as Australia's most famous wine region.  The Barossa is located approximately 70kms northeast of Adelaide, just over an hour's drive from the South Australia’s capital city. There are a few towns in this district such as  AngastonLyndoch,Nuriootpa and Tanunda. According to 2009 survey, there are 150 wineries and more than 70  Barossa Cellar Doors (Tasting Rooms).

On Australian Day, the 26th of January, an annual public holiday, we visited some of the wineries with David's friends. As this was only a one day tour, we couldn't visit too many wineries, however it was an interesting experience for me as I was able to try a few different types of wines without getting drunk.

The first stop was Saltram's winery, claimed to be The Barossa's Icon since 1859. Saltram resides at the entrance to the Barossa township of Angaston.  You can hire this winery and it's restaurant for functions like a wedding reception.

The Second stop was the Kaesler winery. The Kaesler family were pioneers who settled in the Barossa Valley in the 1840’s. In 1891 they bought a parcel of land and in 1893 planted their first vines. Today Kaesler wines are made from these ancient, dry grown vineyards, by the third owners of this magnificent property. Here Dat, David's friend, became very attracted to the large wine bottles, as he has a dozen bottles in his collection, but the bottle he was interested in was valued in the thousands of dollars, so he settled for 2 bottles of red port.

The third winery we are visited was Chateau Dorrien which offers an experience not to be missed when you visit the Barrossa Valley.  We walked through an almost 100 years old building to the craft section and Heritage Gallery, where a local artist has lovingly painted in Mural form the Settlement of the Barossa Valley and the wine making techniques from the beginning to the present day on seven vats. It is a delight for historians, school groups and the general tourists. Here David bought Dorrien Wines Chocolatine and Gran Miele Gran which is chocolate and orange mead for me.

sThe next stop was the Winter Creek winery and Sunday Market. This label has for the 5th year in a row has taken a Gold medal  for its Vintage Fortified Shiraz in the Barossa Wine Show.  We looked around the market where I was able to buy some scrap-booking supplie but we only spent few minutes in the winery where bought another 2 bottles of white port.

Stanley Lamberts's cellar door was our next stop. Located in the heart of the Barossa, drive through Tanunda and you'll find them at the end of the Para Road. This winery began in 2005 when Lindsay Stanley and Jim Lambert started their partnership. The Lambert family moved from Las Vegas and purchased a vineyard in the Valley. Jim, for many years had been interested in wine and wine-making, and Lindsay had been making award winning wines for over 30 years. Here, Dat was falling in love in again with another big bottle.

The sixth winery was the Illparra winery which is located in Tanunda. There isn't much information about this winery and we bought nothing here.

As nobody was drunk yet, the tour continued to the Turkey Flat vineyards which has five vineyards spread over a radius of 20km from Bethany in the south, Ebenezer in the north, Stonewell in the west, with other vineyards in the east.

We then came across the Keg Factory. Every year, thousands of casks and kegs are produced to fulfill the wine makers needs to store their wine. Here, Dat asked about a variety of keg sizes and prices as he is going to produce his own wine soon. ^_^.

Finally, everybody felt tired and David was starting to get a little tipsy (thanks God, he was not driving), so we decided to go home. However on the way back, Dat decided that we'd stop at one more winery, Kies. The Kies family arrived from Silesia in 1857 and has been growing grapes in Lyndoch ever since.  The Kies Family Wines 2005 Klauber Block Shiraz is proving to be one of the most successful vintages for the label, achieving a Silver Medal at the 2010 Decanter World Wine Awards.

Mau bergabung?
So, in total we had visited 8 wineries and one keg factory. Everybody was so happy and have planned for another winery tour to another region. Do you want to join us?

The Santos Tour Down Under 2011

The Santos Tour Down Under was first held in 1999 and has grown year upon year to become one of the biggest races on the international cycling calender.  Not just a bike race, the Santos Tour Down Under is a festival of cycling, with a range of associated events and festivals that create a massive party atmosphere across South Australia.

The Tour  invites the whole state to the party, by taking the race through several South Australian regions. Stages 1 to 5 of the Tour are held in regional centres and typically concludes with the final stage being held on the streets of Adelaide. It provides a significant contribution to the state's tourism industry and showcases the attractions of South Australia to the world through global television coverage.

This year, the Tour took place between the 16th through until the 23rd of January. The first day started with the presentation of all the teams to the public followed by The Cancer Council Classic Stage Action. It was a short, closed circuit race. The Cancer Council is dedicated to ensuring that South Australians are reducing their cancer risks and receiving the best cancer care possible. At the 2011 Santos Tour Down Under, the Cancer Council SA will be encouraging the community to support their Ride for a Reason campaign to reduce the impact of cancer.

As this tour is one of the biggest events in South Australia, I wanted to experience the festivties and the  excitement. So, on the 19th of January, we headed to Mannum to join the excitement of the stage 2 which started in Tailem Bend. Mannum, on the Murray River, is a river playground city situated 100km from Adelaide. The beauty of the river makes Mannum one of  the most popular day trip venues in South Australia.

Here, you can just grab a coffee and sit by the riverbank, relax and enjoy the serenity of the Murray River on a fantastic water cruise or rent a houseboat to explore the river.

Welcoming the tour,  the route was decorated all the way from Tailem Blend to Mannum and beyond. Mannum also held a one day festival with a lot of activities, such as a barbecue brunch, the Murray River Choir, a Food and Wine festival, markets all followed by a huge concert and finishing with a fireworks display.

For this event, the main road was closed for several hours. There was a lot of attractions along the street. The visitor can enjoy the show while having lunch served by the Lions Club at the Shearer Car Park.

While we were waiting for the cyclist to arrive, we walked along the bank of the river, looked through the market and had a cup of coffee.

At around 2.30pm, we heard that the cyclist would be arriving soon, so we all gathered along the main road to welcome them.

Oops!...100m before the finish line, there was an accident.   It didn't impact the front runners, but it caused havoc further back with around two dozen riders caught up in the chaos. Apparently, this was a second accident in stage 2. The 1st happened in the last 4km of the 146km stage where British sprint ace Mark Cavendish  was covered in nasty cuts and abrasions as the wheel of teammate Matt Goss smacked into his neck when he went down.
Oh, .... 100 meter menjelang garis finish terjadi kecelakaan.

Half hour after all the cyclist crossed the finish line, the trucks moved in and the clean-up began. They needed to do it quickly so the main street could once again be opened and to set up for the next stage in Strathalbyn.

We didn't wait for the concert and the fireworks to start because that we wanted to get back to Adelaide before dark.
So, perjalanan hari ini berakhir sampai disini.

Note : While we're in Mannum, a journalist took our picture. So, here we're on the Murray Valley Standard newspaper.

Dinosaurs Alive

Dari bulan November 2010 sampai 23 January 2011 di Adelaide Show Ground bertempat di Strirling Angas Pavilion, diadakan pameran "Dinosaurs Alive".
From November 2010 until January 23, 2011 at the Adelaide Show Ground in the Stirling Angas Pavilion, the Dinosaurs Alive exhibition was held.

Actually I wasn't sure that I wanted to go to this event, the ticket price for an adult was $18 and even though we had a flyer for 15% discount, I still thought it was a bit expensive. However, David insisted he wanted to take some pictures and videos of the mechanical dinosaurs for Janice and Glenn, my niece and nephew. So here I am, walking in the artificial jungle to meet the dinosaurs.

Here, the visitors can marvel and learn about the eight dinosaurs on display as they walk through the exhibition. They will see Tyrannosaurus Rex, Velociraptor, Stegosaurus, Apatosaurus, HuayangosaurusGasosaurus, Protoceratops and Spinosaurus in motion. By seeing the life-like dinosaurs move in front of them, guests can imagine how the magnificent creatures once roamed the Earth.

While we walked through each of the dinosaur exhibits, we keep saying, "What will Glenn think about this?", "Will Glenn be scared to see these dinosaurs?" or "Maybe Glenn will ask me to carry him all the way through the exhibitions!". Oh... how I wish he were here with us.

Besides the exhibition, there is also a Family Activity Room where visitors can uncover fossils in the dig-a-fossil pits, use dinosaur stamps and piece together large dinosaur puzzles. There's also a shop with books, toys and a range of useful and educative dinosaur related products. As Glenn was not here, I tried all those activity for him.

Well, I thought about Glenn a lot while I was there and it made me miss him so much! At the end, even though it was only a one hour journey, I had so much fun there. ^_^

Drive In

During the school holiday's, we often found a discount voucher in the newspaper for the movies. On 11 January 2011, we found a $10 per car voucher for the movie showing at the Gepp Cross Drive-in, Tangled, an animated feature about Princess Rapunzel, plus a box of popcorn for free.

The movie was due to start at 9pm, but to find a good spot, we arrived at 8.  We found a great spot, which is not too far from the big screen, 2nd row center. The Gepps Cross Drive in is a quite large and the last one in Adelaide.

To hear the film, you can either hang a speaker on your car window or tune your car radio at 961.1FM.

Most of the audience were families with kids, but the voucher was limited to 5 persons per car. As it is summer time, some brought folding chairs and sat outside of the car. Well, it's loads of fun for the kids. However, I preferred to sit inside the car, because I wore my pajamas (like so many of the kids!). ^_^.

Because we had to wait for more than an hour, I brought my book and some cherries, so I won't get bored or hungry while waiting, while David choose to clean the windscreen, so we could watch the film more clearly.

Well, let's enjoy the movie...
